Dancing on the Ceiling
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Lionel Richie began this album in 1985, while he was also busy with We Are the World. His first two solo albums had been great successes. The new album was at first to be called Say You, Say Me and to appear in December 1985. But he no longer felt like those songs because of what he saw around him, and rewrote them. The recording ultimately took well over a year and a half. The record took its title from the next single, Dancing on the Ceiling, and was released in August 1986.
Richie wanted to present a mixture of sounds. Reviewers responded mostly positively. Rolling Stone singled out Say You, Say Me for praise, while Ballerina Girl was criticised for its sentimentality. The album topped the American Billboard 200 and the title song reached number two in the United States. After that, Richie took a long break of ten years.
