Rumours

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Album

Rumours · After the great success of the 1975 album Fleetwood Mac, the band wanted to make a pop album that built on it. Recording began in February 1976 at the Record Plant in Sausalito, California, and ultimately lasted a year. It was produced by the band with Ken Caillat and Richard Dashut. In the meantime the band members had drifted apart: Christine and John McVie's marriage was over, and Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks had a quarrelling relationship. Hard drugs did not make the work any easier.

Those breakups colour the lyrics, which are about personal and often difficult relationships. The music mixes electric and acoustic instruments with striking rhythms. All four singles, Go Your Own Way, Dreams, Don't Stop and You Make Loving Fun, reached the American top ten. Critics praised the production and the harmonies of the three singers. In 1978 the album won a Grammy for Album of the Year.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen in Go Your Own Way to how guitars and vocals together carry the song. Notice what the lyrics tell of a relationship falling apart.
