Future Games

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Future Games is Fleetwood Mac's fifth album and was released on 3 September 1971. The record was made in the summer of 1971 at Advision Studios in London. Christine McVie was now a full member. Jeremy Spencer had left abruptly in February 1971 to join the Children of God. After an audition the band chose the American guitarist Bob Welch, who plays here for the first time.

Without Spencer's Chicago blues and 1950s rock and roll, the music moved further away from the blues, towards the melodic pop sound with which the band would break through in America four years later. Four of the eight tracks are by Danny Kirwan, with Sands of Time as a complex example. Reprise did not want an album with seven songs, so What a Shame was hastily recorded as a jam. Welch's title song appears in the film Almost Famous.
