Junjo

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Junjo is Esperanza Spalding's debut, released on 18 April 2006 on the Spanish label Ayva Music. She was 22 at the time and played double bass in a piano trio with pianist Aruán Ortiz and drummer Francisco Mela. She sings on all the tracks except two, often without words. Besides original compositions, the trio plays work by Jimmy Rowles, Egberto Gismonti and Chick Corea.

The music draws on jazz and on Brazilian and other Latin American styles. Michael Nastos of AllMusic called the record an exercise in joy and freedom. Jim Santella of All About Jazz praised her wordless singing and her conversational bass playing, and Jamie Katz of Vibe heard in her own compositions a new and important voice in jazz.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Junjo and notice how her double bass and wordless singing interact with piano and drums, almost like a conversation.
