Esperanza

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Esperanza is Esperanza Spalding's second studio album, released on 20 May 2008 by Heads Up International. She grew up among many cultures and sings on the record in three languages: English, Spanish and Portuguese. She plays acoustic bass, on two tracks a Doolin bass, and took care of the arrangements and the production. Guests included Donald Harrison, Ambrose Akinmusire and Gretchen Parlato, among others.

Critics praised the breadth of the record. Thom Jurek of AllMusic wrote that she broadens her musical adventure at every point, with taste, refinement and humour. Nate Chinen of Vibe found the album coherent and varied. After her Grammy for Best New Artist in February 2011 it entered at number 138 on the Billboard 200. It spent more than seventy weeks on the Top Jazz Albums chart.
