Wonderland

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Wonderland is the debut album of the English synth-pop duo Erasure and was released on 1 May 1986 on Sire Records in the United States and on 2 June on Mute Records in the United Kingdom and Germany. Vince Clarke, who had earlier had success with Depeche Mode and Yazoo, formed the duo with singer Andy Bell, who names Alison Moyet as an influence on his voice.

The album was not an immediate success. The three singles failed to reach the top forty in the United Kingdom, although the record did better in Germany and Sweden. In the United States two singles reached the top ten of the dance club chart. Billboard called Reunion and Oh l'amour pop disco and also praised Say What and Love Is a Loser. A reviewer for Sounds was scathing. Later Who Needs Love Like That and Oh l'amour did reach high positions after all, in remixed form.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Oh L'Amour and notice the pop-disco character of the song: the danceable rhythms and the glossy synthesizers.
