The Divine Conspiracy
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Divine Conspiracy is Epica's third studio album and their first concept album. It was released in 2007 on Nuclear Blast. The idea is that God created many religions so that people would discover that at heart they are the same. At the same time the record completes the series The Embrace That Smothers, about the dangers of organised religion. After drummer Jeroen Simons left in 2006, Ariën van Weesenbeek played as a guest.
Many themes come from the news. Safeguard to Paradise is about convincing suicide bombers, in sharp contrast with the gentle music. Beyond Belief is about the conflict between science and religion, without taking sides. Death of a Dream tells of a young Muslim woman who was killed by her father, with grunts by Sander Gommans. It was the band's first album in the Dutch top ten, at number nine.
