Halber Mensch

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Halber Mensch is the third album by the German industrial band Einstürzende Neubauten and was released on 2 September 1985. Here the group shows a broader artistic range. Yü-Gung (Fütter mein Ego) contains elements of electronic dance music, and the title track is almost a cappella.

The dynamics are also greater. In Seele Brennt, Blixa Bargeld's voice suddenly leaps from a barely audible whisper to a high scream. In Letztes Biest (am Himmel), calm bass guitar notes float above modest percussion. Trouser Press called it their strongest record and AllMusic an outstanding achievement of industrial music. In 2019 Pitchfork ranked it second among the best industrial albums of all time.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Seele Brennt and notice the moment when the whisper turns into a scream.
