A Girl Called Dusty

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Dusty Springfield first sang in the Lana Sisters and then in The Springfields, together with her brother Tom. On tour in America she heard soul, and in 1963 she decided to go solo, because she wanted to sing more than the group allowed. Her first single, I Only Want to Be with You, was still recorded with The Springfields. That success led to A Girl Called Dusty, released on 17 April 1964 on Philips. Johnny Franz and the singer herself produced, and Ivor Raymonde conducted the orchestra.

The record contains mostly straightforward pop songs and a few numbers with a Motown influence, such as Mockingbird. For the first time she recorded songs by Burt Bacharach and Hal David and by Gerry Goffin and Carole King. In 1997 the NME called it a fairly strong debut.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Mockingbird for the Motown influence in the rhythm and in the way she sings.
