Sunshine Superman
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
In 1965 Donovan wanted to shed his folk image, after being accused of copying Bob Dylan. After the end of his relationship with Linda Lawrence he wrote songs in which he wanted to win her back. With the producer Mickie Most and the arranger John Cameron he began work on Sunshine Superman at Abbey Road on 19 December 1965. The word sunshine in the title was slang for LSD. The arrangement with bass, harpsichord, drums and electric guitars, including by Jimmy Page, is regarded as one of the first psychedelic recordings.
The record was released on 26 August 1966 in the United States, but not in Britain because of a contract dispute. Chamber orchestra arrangements of strings and woodwinds colour Bert's Blues and Legend of a Girl Child Linda, which lasts almost seven minutes. The second phase of recording took place in Los Angeles. The record reached number 11 on the American chart and was his biggest success there.
