Last Time I Saw Him

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Last Time I Saw Him is Diana Ross's fifth studio album and was released on 6 December 1973 on Motown. Seven arrangers worked on it, among them Gene Page, Michael Omartian, Bob Gaudio and Paul Riser. The album reached number fifty-two in the United States. With it, Ross won the 1974 American Music Award for favourite R&B female artist. It was her last studio record in three years, until Diana Ross in 1976.

The title single was a hit: number one on the Adult Contemporary chart and number fourteen on the Hot 100. The song sounds like a blend of country and Dixieland jazz, a departure from her usual sound. The country singer Dottie West made a version of her own shortly afterwards. The album also contains a cover of Behind Closed Doors, which had earlier been a country hit for Charlie Rich, and of Turn Around from the 1960s.
