De La Soul Is Dead

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

De La Soul Is Dead · After the celebrated debut 3 Feet High and Rising, many listeners eagerly awaited a second record. De La Soul chose a different direction. The title and the cover, with a broken pot of daisies, are a farewell to the hippie image of the D.A.I.S.Y. age. The producer Prince Paul said they wanted to prove they did not have just one album in them. The album was released on 14 May 1991. A series of skits parodies old read-along books with records, in which bullies steal a cassette with an album by the group and criticise it.

The humour is darker and more cynical than before. My Brother's a Basehead is about addiction, Millie Pulled a Pistol on Santa about sexual abuse. In contrast there are lighthearted songs such as A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturdays. The reviews were divided, but the music received more praise than the tone. The magazine The Source was one of the first to give the album its top rating of five mics.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey) and notice the contrast between the lyrics, in which the group complains about up-and-coming artists who want to hitch a ride, and the playful disco groove beneath.
