AOI: Bionix

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

AOI: Bionix, De La Soul's sixth studio album, was released on 4 December 2001. It was the second part of a planned series of three discs and the group's last work for Tommy Boy. The first single, Baby Phat with Yummy Bingham and Devin the Dude, was an ode to fuller-figured women. In Held Down with Cee-Lo, Posdnuos reflects on fatherhood, religion and fame. Slick Rick takes part in What We Do (For Love), a funny song about puberty and sexual discovery.

Between the songs are sketches featuring Reverend Do Good, which also serve as social commentary. The last sketch leads into Peer Pressure, with J Dilla in the intro and outro. Tommy Boy ceased to exist, so the planned second single Special never came. The reviews were mostly favourable. Robert Christgau wrote that anyone wondering what hip hop sounds like when it grows up will find the answer here.
