Aladdin Sane
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Aladdin Sane · After his breakthrough with Ziggy Stardust, David Bowie wrote an album for the first time as an established star. He made most of the songs during the American tour at the end of 1972, and America leaves a clear mark on it. Bowie himself described it as Ziggy goes to America. He recorded it in New York and London between legs of the tour, with the producer Ken Scott and the Spiders from Mars, for the last time with the full line-up.
The pianist Mike Garson, with a background in jazz and blues, added something new to the arrangements. The lyrics deal with urban decay, drugs, sex, violence and death. The sound is harder than before, with influences from the Rolling Stones, one of whose songs is covered. The Jean Genie and Drive-In Saturday reached the British top five, and the album went to number one in England. Critics were positive.
