Ziggy Stardust
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Album
Ziggy Stardust · After the American promotional tour of February 1971, David Bowie wrote more than thirty new songs in England. Some ended up on Hunky Dory, the rest on this album. It was recorded from November 1971 to February 1972 at Trident Studios in London, with Ken Scott as co-producer and the Spiders from Mars as the band: Mick Ronson on guitar, Trevor Bolder on bass and Mick Woodmansey on drums. Many songs were recorded almost live.
It is a loose concept album about Ziggy Stardust, an androgynous rock star who comes to earth as a saviour and is brought down by his own ego. The story largely emerged only after the songs had been recorded. The music is glam rock with influences from Marc Bolan, Iggy Pop and the Velvet Underground. After the performance of Starman on Top of the Pops in July 1972 he broke through. Later critics see the record as his peak.
