El cartel: The Big Boss

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

El cartel: The Big Boss · Daddy Yankee's fourth studio album was released on 5 June 2007 on El Cartel Records, through Interscope. It is the third part in a series after El Cartel from 1997 and El Cartel II from 2001. After the success of Barrio Fino he had signed with Interscope. Recording began in August 2006 at The Hit Factory in Miami and ended in April 2007 with the remix of Impacto with Fergie. He recorded 26 tracks in total.

The sound is hardcore reggaeton and Latin urban, with tropical rhythms, R&B and hip hop. Producers included Scott Storch, Luny Tunes, Tainy and Mr. Collipark, and guests were Akon, Fergie, will.i.am, Nicole Scherzinger and Héctor el Father. The first single Impacto won a Lo Nuestro Award for video of the year in 2008 and was on the soundtrack of Grand Theft Auto IV. The reviews were divided: some praised the variety, others found the reggaeton formula repetitive.
