Earth Stories

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Earth Stories was released in 1996 and is dedicated to the grandmother of pianist Cyrus Chestnut. He made the record together with producer Yves Beauvais. At first he thought of a sextet, but then he wanted to be the driving force himself. Alvester Garnett plays drums and Steve Kirby bass.

Chestnut wrote nine of the eleven tracks. The styles vary and, according to him, reflect his own history and his love of the blues. He called Cooldaddy's Perspective acoustic funk, with a horn section. Nutman's Invention #1 is played in ragtime style, and In the Garden is a version of a traditional spiritual. The reviews were warm. The Los Angeles Times praised his drive and technique, and the Washington Post called the record the best instrumental jazz album of that year.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Nutman's Invention #1 and notice how the piano sounds like ragtime, with a driving left hand.
