Colour by Numbers · For their second album Culture Club again worked with producer Steve Levine at Red Bus Studios in London. New were the session musicians, including keyboardist Phil Pickett, who co-wrote two songs, and backing singer Helen Terry. The band drew on pop history. The melody of It's a Miracle is inspired by Matrimony by Gilbert O'Sullivan, and Church of the Poison Mind by Stevie Wonder's Uptight.
The album was released in October 1983, preceded by the hit Karma Chameleon, which reached number one in many countries. In England it reached first place. In America it spent six weeks at number two, behind Michael Jackson's Thriller. The reviews were generally positive. Rolling Stone saw in Boy George a first-rate blue-eyed soul balladeer. Later, critics regarded the record as the band's artistic and commercial peak. The four members themselves considered it their best work.
