Wheels of Fire

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Wheels of Fire is Cream's third album and was released in June 1968 in the United States as a double album: one record recorded in the studio, one live. Unlike Disraeli Gears, which was finished in a few days, this album took almost a year, in short sessions with producer Felix Pappalardi and engineer Tom Dowd. For the live side Pappalardi recorded shows in San Francisco in March 1968. By then the tension between the band members was running high.

On the studio record we hear exotic instruments such as glockenspiel, calliope and cello, alongside three blues songs in the usual line-up. Jack Bruce wrote, with poet Pete Brown, among others, White Room and Politician. The live side contains Traintime, Toad, Spoonful and Crossroads. The album was a great success and became the first platinum double album. Immediately afterwards it was announced that the group would split at the end of that year.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Crossroads and notice Eric Clapton's guitar in this live recording. Can you hear how he carries the song as a soloist?
