Disraeli Gears

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Disraeli Gears · Cream's second album came about in New York. After their first American tour the band recorded most of it there in May 1967 at Atlantic Studios, in less than four days, because their visas were expiring. Felix Pappalardi produced, Tom Dowd was the engineer. Pappalardi turned the blues song Lawdy Mama into Strange Brew with new lyrics, the first track to be finished.

The band moved away from their blues roots and chose psychedelic sounds, as in Tales of Brave Ulysses and SWLABR. They are mostly short, self-contained songs, without the long improvisations of their live shows. The vocals were shared more evenly than on the previous record. Ahmet Ertegun at first thought the psychedelia nonsense, but gave in when Booker T. Jones and Otis Redding praised Sunshine of Your Love. The album contains those two hits, Strange Brew and Sunshine of Your Love.

Listening

Listening tip. In Sunshine of Your Love, listen to the guitar riff that carries the song and to how the vocal lies over it.
