String Along With Basie

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

String Along With Basie · String Along with Basie is an album by Count Basie with a small group and a string orchestra. It was recorded in New York on 20 July 1959 and on 10 and 11 May 1960 and was originally released on the Roulette label. The pianist plays himself, with Freddie Green on guitar, George Duvivier on bass and Jimmy Crawford on drums. On some of the tracks we hear the tenor saxophonists Illinois Jacquet and Ben Webster, on others the flautists Herbie Mann and Frank Wess and a trombone section. Quincy Jones and George Williams wrote the arrangements.

The programme consists mainly of well-known songs, such as Summertime, Poor Butterfly, These Foolish Things Remind Me of You and Sweet Lorraine. There are also two blues: Stringing the Blues by Jimmy Jones and Blues Bittersweet by Quincy Jones. AllMusic gave the album four and a half stars.
