Like Water for Chocolate
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Like Water for Chocolate · After One Day It'll All Make Sense, Common moved to New York. There, at Electric Lady Studios, he worked with the Soulquarians, a collective centred on, among others, Questlove, J Dilla, James Poyser, D'Angelo and Pino Palladino. Questlove oversaw the production. The album was released on 28 March 2000 on MCA Records and was his first record on a major label. The title comes from Laura Esquivel's novel.
The sound blends jazz, funk and soul with an Afrocentric bent. Time Travelin' (A Tribute To Fela) and Heat hark back to Afrobeat. Mos Def and MC Lyte take part, and as on the earlier records the rapper closes with spoken word from his father. A Song For Assata tells the story of Assata Shakur. The critical response was glowing. The album became his breakthrough, partly thanks to the video for The Light on MTV.
