Parachutes

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Parachutes · Coldplay began their debut album in the autumn of 1999. They first recorded in London with Chris Allison, then in Wales and in Liverpool with Ken Nelson, who produced most of the songs. A two-week recording turned into a seven-month project, because the band was also touring. Nelson had the group play more calmly, because live they sounded nervous and rushed. The result was a collection of moody, atmospheric songs at slow tempos, which critics placed alongside alternative rock and 1990s Britpop. Chris Martin wrote the song Yellow only after the first recordings had already been completed.

The record received positive reviews and shortly after release was at number one in England. It won a Grammy and a Brit Award. The album is dedicated to the mother of drummer Will Champion, who died two months before its release.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Yellow and notice the calm, slightly wistful atmosphere that characterizes the whole record.
