Cliff Sings

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Cliff Sings was released in November 1959 on EMI Columbia and was Cliff Richard's first studio album, his second album overall. It was recorded at Abbey Road Studios, with Norrie Paramor as producer and Malcolm Addey as engineer. In Britain no singles were taken from the record, which was normal before the 1970s. The album was recorded in stereo and mono, but at first released on LP in mono only.

This album began a pattern that lasted until the mid-1960s: the Shadows and Paramor's orchestra took turns accompanying the singer. According to the back of the sleeve, it was Addey who gave Paramor that idea. The Shadows' drummer Tony Meehan played on all the tracks with orchestra. The album reached number 2 on the British album chart. On the next album, Me and My Shadows, the Shadows played on every track.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Blue Suede Shoes and notice who accompanies the singer, the Shadows or the orchestra, and what that does to the character of the song.
