“Awaken, My Love!”
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
“Awaken, My Love!” · Donald Glover released this third album under the name Childish Gambino on 2 December 2016 on Glassnote Records. He produced it with Ludwig Göransson. It was his first step away from hip hop, towards psychedelic soul, funk and R&B. In June 2016 he announced it with the app pharos.earth, and in September he played the album over three nights in Joshua Tree, where he performed eleven songs in a funk and jazz style, with hardly any rapping.
The sleeve refers to Funkadelic's Maggot Brain from 1971. Critics heard the funkadelia of the 1970s in an ambitious, emotional album. Me and Your Mama was the first single, and Redbone followed a week later. The album received Grammy nominations for Album of the Year and Best Urban Contemporary Album, and Redbone won the Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance.
