Maggot Brain

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Maggot Brain was released in July 1971 on Westbound Records. George Clinton produced the album, which was recorded in late 1970 and early 1971 at United Sound Systems in Detroit. It was the last album by the original line-up: afterwards the guitarist Tawl Ross, the bassist Billy Nelson and the drummer Tiki Fulwood left, and only Clinton, the guitarist Eddie Hazel and the keyboard player Bernie Worrell remained.

The album opens with a spoken passage by Clinton and the ten-minute title track, largely an improvised solo by Hazel. According to legend, Clinton asked him to play as if he had just heard that his mother was dead. Hazel used fuzz and wah, inspired by Jimi Hendrix, and Clinton added echo. The rest of the album offers funk, blues and gospel, and the closer Wars of Armageddon is a long freak-out. The first reviews were divided. Later, critics called it one of the darkest and most intense records ever.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the title track and notice how Hazel's guitar gains more and more room while the rest of the band stays in the background.
