Real People
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Real People is Chic's fourth album and was released in 1980 on Atlantic Records. Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers wrote and produced it in a year in which they were also working on records by Sister Sledge, Sheila and B. Devotion and Diana Ross. It was recorded at The Power Station in New York. The singles were Rebels Are We and Real People, and in the United Kingdom only, also 26.
The album did modestly commercially compared with Diana Ross's work and with earlier Chic records, probably because of the anti-disco backlash. Robert Christgau called it better than Risqué and praised the bouncy rhythms and Rodgers's sharp guitar. He placed it at number fifteen on his 1980 year-end list. AllMusic later found it a fine but not essential record, with Rebels Are We, I Got Protection and Chip Off the Old Block as highlights.
