The Trumpet Artistry of Chet Baker
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Trumpet Artistry of Chet Baker · The Trumpet Artistry of Chet Baker is a compilation on the Pacific Jazz label with recordings from 1953 and 1954, made in Los Angeles and Hollywood. The album contains tracks that had previously appeared on the ten-inch LP Chet Baker Sextet, supplemented with material that had not yet been released. The line-up varies from session to session. Pianist Russ Freeman plays on it, on some tracks we hear Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone and on others the saxophonists Herb Geller, Jack Montrose, Bob Gordon and Bud Shank. Freeman himself wrote, among others, No Ties, Happy Little Sunbeam and Bea's Flat.
The programme consists largely of standards by composers such as Jerome Kern and Jimmy Van Heusen, such as All the Things You Are and Imagination, supplemented with Goodbye by Gordon Jenkins. AllMusic gave the record three stars and called it a perfect introduction to the trumpeter's early music.
