Chet Baker Sings

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Chet Baker Sings · Chet Baker Sings is the trumpeter's first vocal album, released in 1954 by Pacific Jazz Records. Until then he had been almost exclusively an instrumentalist. His mother had been asking him for years to sing more, and in October 1953 he had already sung on two tracks. After that he wanted to record a whole record of vocals, to the scepticism of producer Dick Bock. It was recorded in Hollywood and pianist Russ Freeman chose a number of the songs. According to biographer James Gavin, Bock was worried, because Baker had trouble singing in tune and many takes of each song were needed.

Reactions were sharply divided. Critics called his voice soft and effeminate, which clashed with the masculine image of jazz singers at the time. Even so the record grew into a great success, especially with women. In the year of its release DownBeat voted him best trumpeter and best vocalist. The album received a Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 2001 and also inspired bossa nova.

Listening tip. In My Funny Valentine, listen to the soft, vulnerable singing voice and the small accompanying group: how little it takes to carry the song.
