In Color

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

In Color is Cheap Trick's second studio album, released in 1977 and produced by Tom Werman. Unlike on the debut, the production sounds smoother, in the hope of a commercial breakthrough. The band was deeply dissatisfied. Bassist Tom Petersson later said that the label wanted to make them sound radio-friendly and safe, which meant losing their own sound. In the United States the record did only moderately, but in Japan I Want You to Want Me and Clock Strikes Ten became hits.

Five of the ten tracks later appeared in live versions on Cheap Trick at Budokan. There I Want You to Want Me became a US Top 10 hit, and it is still the group's best-known song. The album is regarded as a power pop classic. In 2003 Rolling Stone placed it at number 443 on its list of the 500 greatest albums.
