Carpenters

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Carpenters · This third album by the duo was released on 14 May 1971 and became their most successful studio album. It reached number two on the US Billboard 200 and number twelve in the United Kingdom. The original sleeve, with an overlapping flap, looked like a large brown envelope. For that reason fans call the record the Tan Album, a nod to the Beatles' White Album. Outside North America the cover usually showed a photograph of the duo.

The hits are For All We Know, Rainy Days and Mondays and Superstar. Rainy Days and Mondays, written by Roger Nichols and Paul Williams, reached number two on the US Hot 100. Almost all the lead vocals are Karen's. Richard sings lead on Druscilla Penny, on Saturday and on part of the Bacharach and David medley. According to the source, the strength of these recordings convinced Richard to put his sister at the front live instead of behind the drums. The album earned four Grammy nominations.
