A Song for You

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

A Song for You, released in June 1972, was the fourth studio album by the American duo Carpenters. Richard Carpenter intended it as a kind of concept album: the title song by Leon Russell opens and closes the record, and the songs in between together make up the song. Six tracks were released as singles. Hurting Each Other, a cover of the Ruby & the Romantics song, reached number two. Goodbye to Love featured a fuzz guitar solo by Tony Peluso, which startled some radio stations, and it had a great influence on later power ballads.

Top of the World, the biggest hit and later a number one, was not released until well over a year after the album, because Richard had underestimated its appeal. Billboard praised Jack Daugherty's production and the musical quality. Bruce Eder of AllMusic called the album the duo's best and the high point of their recording career.

Listening tip. Listen to Goodbye to Love and wait for Tony Peluso's fuzz guitar solo, a sound some radio stations saw nothing in.
