Now & Then
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Now & Then, the Carpenters' fifth studio album, was released on 1 May 1973. The title was an idea of their mother Agnes and comes from a song that did not make it onto the record. Because 1973 saw a revival of old hits, the second side is a medley of oldies, beginning with their own song Yesterday Once More. Guitarist Tony Peluso can be heard in it as a radio DJ, with, among others, The End of the World, Dead Man's Curve, Johnny Angel and One Fine Day.
The first side opens with Sing, written by Joe Raposo of Sesame Street. The record company did not want it as a single, but Richard insisted. He wrote Yesterday Once More after hearing the melody in his head while driving. The provisional chorus lyrics stayed, and the song became the duo's biggest worldwide hit. Rolling Stone praised the second side in particular, and Billboard called the idea of the radio show unique.
