Close to You
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Close to You was released on 19 August 1970 and was the second album by the American duo Carpenters. The first album, Offering, had received little attention. This time it caught on: the record reached number two on the US album chart and topped the chart in Canada. Two singles were responsible. (They Long To Be) Close To You was the first Burt Bacharach and Hal David composition the duo recorded, and it stayed at number one for four weeks. We've Only Just Begun began as music for a bank commercial.
The record also includes covers, such as Help by Lennon and McCartney and Reason To Believe by Tim Hardin. Mr. Guder is dedicated to the boss who fired Richard and lyricist John Bettis at Disneyland because they kept on playing modern songs. The album earned eight Grammy nominations, including one for Album of the Year. The duo won the award for Best New Artist.
