This One's for Basie

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

This One's for Basie · Drummer Buddy Rich recorded this album as a tribute to bandleader Count Basie. He played with an eleven-piece orchestra, with trumpeters Pete Candoli and Harry Sweets Edison, trombonist Frank Rosolino, pianist Jimmy Rowles and guitarist Bill Pitman, among others. Marty Paich wrote the arrangements.

The repertoire consists of pieces associated with Basie, such as Blue and Sentimental, Jumpin' at the Woodside, Shorty George and 9:20 Special. Blues for Basie, by Edison, is at just over seven minutes the longest track. Verve later reissued the record. In the sixties it appeared under the title Big Band Shout, but without Blues for Basie.
