Rising

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Rising was released on 30 July 2002 and is Bruce Springsteen's twelfth studio album. It came seven years after The Ghost of Tom Joad, his longest gap between two studio albums, and was his first in almost twenty years with the E Street Band. It was also the start of a collaboration with producer Brendan O'Brien. After the attacks of 11 September 2001, a stranger said to him: "We need you now". The album draws largely on his thoughts about those days, although a few songs had been written earlier.

The title song tells of a firefighter going into the World Trade Center. My City of Ruins was originally about Asbury Park and took on a new meaning after the attacks. Worlds Apart is the most experimental track, with a strong Middle Eastern influence and qawwali singers in the intro. The reviews were mostly very positive, although some critics found the lyrics too vague. The album won two Grammys.
