After the Heat

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

After the Heat was released in 1978 under the name Eno Moebius Roedelius. Brian Eno worked here for the second time with Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius of Cluster, after Cluster & Eno in 1977. Once again the influential Krautrock producer Conny Plank was involved as engineer.

A number of piano-led instrumentals recall the earlier album, but according to Pitchfork, After the Heat lives in a world of its own. Trouser Press heard an alluring collection of instrumentals that cleverly sidesteps the pitfalls of ambient. There is also singing: in Broken Head the declaimed voice stands out through tape flanging, and Tzima N'Arki contains a vocal part recorded backwards with a snatch of the chorus of King's Lead Hat. That makes it not a pure ambient record.

Listening

Listening tip. In Broken Head, listen to the declaimed voice and notice the floating effect that the tape flanging gives it.
