Royal Garden Blues

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Royal Garden Blues was released in 1986 and is an album by saxophonist Branford Marsalis. His brother Delfeayo produced. Ron Carter and Herbie Hancock played on it, and Ellis Marsalis is at the piano on Swingin' at the Haven, which he wrote himself. The Wrath of Tain is a tribute to drummer Jeff Tain Watts. The title song is an arrangement of a jazz standard, and Spike Lee directed the video.

The album was nominated for a Grammy. One newspaper heard the influence of Miles Davis's mid-sixties quintet. Reviews were divided: some found it conservatively played, others called it playful. AllMusic saw it as one of the saxophonist's more playful records.
