Bon Iver, Bon Iver
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Bon Iver, Bon Iver · For the second album Justin Vernon brought in other musicians, such as bass saxophonist Colin Stetson and pedal steel guitarist Greg Leisz. He built up the record himself, but he let the guests change the sound. Recording took place at April Base Studios in Fall Creek, Wisconsin, a converted veterinary clinic that Vernon and his brother had bought in 2008, close to the house where he grew up. The album was seen as a new direction compared with the debut.
Each song stands for a place, and that gives the record its theme. Perth was the first song Vernon wrote. Minnesota, WI combines fingerpicked guitars, double bass drums and a distorted bass saxophone. Holocene is named after a bar in Portland and after a geological epoch. Beth / Rest, full of brass, closes the album and is the song Vernon was proudest of. The critical response was full of praise, and the album won a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album.
