22, a Million

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

22, a Million · The songs on this third album took shape between 2012 and 2016. Justin Vernon recorded it in his own studio, April Base, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. It is a clear change of course: the folk of the early days gives way to electronic music, with many samples, synthesizers and wind instruments. Many sounds were created and processed with a Teenage Engineering OP-1 and with a harmonizer designed for the band. The lyrics are largely about Bon Iver's growing fame and how Vernon's relationship to the world changed as a result.

The record had its premiere at Vernon's own festival Eaux Claires. Numerous samples are worked in: 22 Over Soon uses a piece of Mahalia Jackson, 10 Death Breast a song by Stevie Nicks, and 00000 Million a song by Fionn Regan. Critics praised the idiosyncratic sound and the colourful lyrics. Pitchfork and Rolling Stone later placed the album on their lists of the best albums of the decade.

Listening tip. Listen to 22 (OVER S∞∞N) and notice how the sampled gospel fragment by Mahalia Jackson sounds through the electronic textures.
