II

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

II · Bon Iver saw i,i as the fourth and last season of a cycle. For Emma, Forever Ago was winter, Bon Iver, Bon Iver spring and 22, A Million summer. This album was autumn. Frontman Justin Vernon called it the most mature and complete record. It was recorded over a long period at April Base in Wisconsin and finished at Sonic Ranch in Texas. James Blake, Aaron Dessner, Bruce Hornsby and Moses Sumney, among others, contributed. It was released on 8 August 2019, one song every hour.

The sound combines elements of the earlier albums: acoustic guitars, horns, piano, synthesizers and layered voices, with a more sparing use of electronics than on 22, A Million. Most critics were full of praise. The album received Grammy nominations, including for Album of the Year.

Listening

Listening tip. In iMi, listen to how acoustic sounds and electronics run into one another. Also notice the voices, which lie over one another in layers.
