The Basement Tapes

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Basement Tapes · After his motorcycle accident in July 1966, Bob Dylan withdrew to Woodstock. In 1967 he recorded more than a hundred songs there with the future members of The Band, first in his house and then in the basement of the house known as Big Pink. There were original songs, covers and traditional numbers. The style was more intimate than on his earlier albums and leaned on American folk music, with humour, but also themes such as betrayal and the search for redemption.

The recordings circulated for years as bootlegs. Only in 1975 did an official release appear on Columbia: sixteen songs by Dylan and The Band from 1967, supplemented with eight songs by The Band alone, and with overdubs. The record was received with praise. Some critics did wonder why well-known songs from 1967 were missing and why recordings by The Band that had not been made in Woodstock were included.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Tears of Rage. Richard Manuel wrote the music for a lyric that Dylan gave him, so notice how the vocals and the accompaniment form a single whole.
