Rough and Rowdy Ways
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Rough and Rowdy Ways · Bob Dylan recorded this record in January and February 2020 at Sound City Studios in Los Angeles. It was his first album of his own songs since Tempest in 2012, after three albums of old pop standards. Recording followed directly on from a tour that many critics said included his best performances in years. The Never Ending Tour band played on it, joined by Blake Mills and Fiona Apple, among others.
It is one of his most varied albums. Acoustic folk, such as I Contain Multitudes, stands alongside electric blues numbers such as False Prophet. I've Made Up My Mind to Give Myself to You is a ballad. Murder Most Foul lasts almost seventeen minutes and contains a long string of song titles. The lyrics are dense and full of references, about art, religion, death and political assassinations. Critics were unanimous in their praise, and Murder Most Foul became his first song to top an American Billboard chart.
