The Great Escape
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Great Escape is Blur's fourth studio album. It was released on 11 September 1995 on Food Records and Virgin Records. Stephen Street produced it at Maison Rouge and Townhouse in London. Damon Albarn wrote all fifteen songs. "Mr Robinson's Quango" was the first to be recorded and "It Could Be You" the last, in May 1995. The title of that last song comes from the slogan of the British National Lottery.
The record follows on from Modern Life Is Rubbish (1993) and Parklife (1994) and is regarded as the third part of that Britpop sequence. "Country House" became Blur's first number 1 in the United Kingdom in August 1995, in the Battle of Britpop against "Roll with It" by Oasis. The album topped the British album chart and was certified triple platinum. Albarn himself later called it "messy".
