Modern Life Is Rubbish
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Modern Life Is Rubbish · After the success of Leisure, Blur fell out of favour in 1992. The band was in debt, came back disillusioned from a failed American tour and was told that the record company Food would drop them. Damon Albarn pushed for a new course: back to the British guitar pop of groups such as the Kinks and the Small Faces. A first attempt with producer Andy Partridge failed. Stephen Street finished the album, and on Christmas Day Albarn wrote For Tomorrow to keep the record company happy.
The sound is melodic and rich, with brass, strings and backing vocals. Advert is punk, Sunday Sunday sounds like vaudeville. The music press was full of praise and the album reached number 15. It is regarded as one of the defining records of Britpop.
