Take Off Your Pants and Jacket
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Take Off Your Pants and Jacket · After the enormous success of 1999's Enema of the State, the band had to make a follow-up in a short space of time. Recording ran from December 2000 to March 2001 with the same producer, Jerry Finn, mostly in San Diego. The label MCA put pressure on the deadline, and the three members disagreed about the direction. During the writing, Travis Barker was given the status of official member.
When their manager complained that there was no summery hit on the album, Mark Hoppus wrote The Rock Show in ten minutes, and Tom DeLonge wrote First Date. Both became hits, as did Stay Together for the Kids. Take Off Your Pants and Jacket became the first punk album to reach number one in the United States. Critics praised its take on teenage themes; others saw precisely there its weakness.
