Cheshire Cat

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Cheshire Cat is the debut album by the American band Blink-182, who at the time were still simply called Blink. It was released on 17 February 1995 on the San Diego label Cargo Music. The trio, guitarist Tom DeLonge, bassist Mark Hoppus and drummer Scott Raynor, had formed in 1992 and had made three demos that won Cargo over. The album was recorded quickly, mostly at Westbeach Recorders in Los Angeles, with producer Otis Barthoulameu and few overdubs.

The sixteen songs combine fast power chords and melodic hooks with silly jokes, alongside a handful of more serious songs about relationships and insecurity. M+M's and Wasting Time were released as singles, while Carousel became a fan favourite. The album grew steadily, thanks to advertising in skate magazines and local radio. When an Irish band of the same name threatened legal action, the trio added 182 to their name.

Listening tip. Listen to Carousel and notice the tempo, the simple power chords and the melody that still rises above them.
