Wildest Organ In Town!

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Wildest Organ In Town! · Wildest Organ in Town! was released in 1966 with arrangements by Sly Stone. Billy Preston plays organ in a mix of covers and original work. He reworks In the Midnight Hour by Wilson Pickett and Steve Cropper, Uptight by Stevie Wonder, A Hard Day's Night by Lennon and McCartney, Satisfaction by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards and I Got You by James Brown. There are also original tracks, such as Ain't Got No Time to Play, and three that he wrote together with Stone: Advice, It's Got to Happen and Free Funk.

The album reached number 118 on the Billboard 200. AllMusic wrote that his early talent as a flashy organ equivalent of Jimi Hendrix has largely been forgotten, and that it did not help that this record was unavailable for years.

Listening

Listening tip. In A Hard Day's Night, listen to what the organ does with a familiar Beatles song.
