The Most Exciting Organ Ever

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Most Exciting Organ Ever is Billy Preston's second album. The record is entirely instrumental and was released in January 1965. The title says it all: the organ is central. Besides pieces by Preston himself there are versions of existing songs, such as If I Had a Hammer by Lee Hays and Pete Seeger and Slippin' and Slidin' by Richard Penniman and others.

The best-known track is Billy's Bag, which at the time was loved by British musicians and clubgoers. Preston later also recorded a live version of it, which is on his 1974 album Live European Tour. Extra tracks from the recording sessions for this record appeared on his next studio album.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Billy's Bag, the track that British musicians and clubgoers were crazy about at the time, and notice how the organ carries the whole piece without vocals.
