Jazz Giant

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Jazz Giant was recorded in 1957 and 1958 and released on Contemporary Records. It is a session with a septet, in which Benny Carter plays alto saxophone and trumpet and also wrote the arrangements. He plays together with, among others, the tenor saxophonist Ben Webster, the trombonist Frank Rosolino, the pianist André Previn, the guitarist Barney Kessel, the bassist Leroy Vinnegar and the drummer Shelly Manne.

According to AllMusic, the music does not fit a pigeonhole such as swing or bop and simply deserves the name classic. The Penguin Guide to Jazz called it a great record for a small group, full of imagination and ingenuity, with classic interplay between the bandleader and Webster.
